Lord Mayors - Civic Reception
4th May 2007 – The 8th Annual Civic Reception at the Council House.
The 8th Annual Civic Reception took place on Friday 4th May 2007 at the Council House Banqueting Suite. A good turnout of volunteers were recognised for all their hard work and efforts over the last year.
A tribute was paid to Andrew Murphy – one of our longest serving volunteers. Andy coached at Conway school for 2 ½ years and has been heavily involved in the organisation of the annual FootBULL tournament at the University of Birmingham. He has done a great job of balancing his academic studies at University with his commitment to Local Leagues. Upon completing his studies, Andy secured full time employment in the Sports and Leisure industry.
The award for Local Leagues’ volunteer of the year went to Shozab Haider. He started at South Birmingham College in September 2006 and made excellent progress on all aspects of his BTEC first Diploma in Sports Studies course. He has successfully balanced his academic studies with his volunteering contributions, becoming a popular and reliable individual at Local Leagues who’s well respected by the schools he coaches in, particularly at Heath Mount primary school.
This year we also honoured Conway School for their outstanding contribution and support to Local Leagues and the volunteer programme spanning almost a decade. Conway has given our volunteers and coaching staff a great opportunity to develop their skills through delivering after school and in school coaching sessions and activities. An award was presented to a pleasantly shocked Head of the school.

There were 10 schools that provided these ‘placements’ and where 10 volunteer-led school sessions per week took place. With an average of 20 children per session, this equated to 200 children benefiting per week.
