Guest Coaches
Wednesday sessions were allocated as ‘guest sessions’ to enable the children and young people to experience new types of sport. The first Wednesday activity was kickboxing. This activity was very much enjoyed and the young people remained interested in kickboxing and several of them requested to practice their kicking and punching on the Sports Hall mannequins throughout the duration of the summer.
Swimming
For the 2nd Wednesday afternoon we took a group of girls and a group of boys to Moseley Swimming Baths. They each had an hour of swimming with floats and balls in the pool. The session was extremely popular with many of the children asking to be taught how to swim and several of them gained the confidence to do this. The pool ensured that the girls’ session was girls-only and we had sole use of the pool for an hour. The sessions were so popular we decided to run 2 more swimming sessions during the summer.
Dance Group
We booked a dance workshop on August 8th. The young people were really excited as it was something they had never tried before. A female dancer started the hour long session by teaching the group a small routine to an R n B track. Shy at first, the children really got involved. The children were then split into groups and asked to compose their own routine. They had 15 minutes to combine their ideas and finish the routine. They all had a chance to show off their creativity and perform in front of everyone else.
During week 4 we had 2 new female coaches who specialised in Gymnastics and Korfball. The girls really enjoyed experiencing these new sports, and, following the success of the dance the previous week and the opportunities for gymnastics week 4 presented they began to put together their own displays and present them to the group at the beginning of each afternoon session.
For the final sessions at Calthorpe Park we ran mini tournaments in Football, Softball and Basketball. The summer culminated with a Family Fun Day for all the children and young people and their families at Calthorpe Park. A full report of this day is included later in this report.
