Knowledge Is Power (K.I.P) Dance Group
8th August 2007 - Slater Sports Hall / Calthorpe Park
Knowledge is power (K.I.P) Dance group were booked to run a dance workshop. Two dancers from the group came down and the young people were really excited as it was something they had never tried before. A female dancer started the hour long session by teaching the group a small routine to an RnB track. Shy at first, the children really got involved.
The children were then split into groups with girls at Slater Sports Hall and boys at Calthorpe Park and were asked to compose their own routine from the routine the instructor gave them to begin with. They had 15 minutes to combine their ideas and finish the routine.
They all had a chance to show off their creativity and perform in front of everyone else.
Afterwards, Ben – the group leader – talked them through the history of break dancing and demonstrated many moves and their names. The children thoroughly enjoyed it and were asked by Ben to come and perform at the launch of his company. Each session was split into 3 parts with each session being started by teaching a small routine to an R n B track. Despite the initial hesitation, everyone learnt the basic routine.
In the following week we had 2 new female coaches who specialised in gymnastics and korfball. The girls really enjoyed experiencing these new sports, and, following the success of the dance the previous week. The gymnastics week enabled them to put together their own displays and present them to the group at the beginning of each afternoon session.
