Water World Trip

The Group at Water World

(11th August 2006)

On Friday 11th August 2006, 39 young people that had been regularly attending the Summer Scheme on a trip to Water World in Stoke on Trent.
Local Leagues staff selected young people who had shown good behaviour during the Summer Scheme for the trip as a reward.
The day itself was great fun with the children and staff spending 4 hours splashing around in the pools and testing their nerve on the many slides the facility had to offer before tucking into their lunch and heading home. The atmosphere was great and the trip was enjoyed by everyone, even though by the end they were all very tired.

Conclusion

Over 200 young people across 10 different schools registered with Local Leagues over summer. We had an average of 64 participants daily throughout the holiday (well above our target of 50) the scheme was a major success. We worked with some extremely talented youngsters and saw improvement in many whilst also giving them the chance to discover sports they may not have played before.
Overall, the scheme was a massive improvement over the previous year with all those involved on the day to day running and partaking in the activities having a totally fun-filled 5 weeks.

Areas for Improvement

There were at least 40 participants whose confidence and social skills would have benefited from a recreational trip. It was a shame that these young people had to be turned away, as their were insufficient funds for them.
The possibility of signing the young people up before the start of the scheme is very real. This would help in a number of ways; main one being we would be able to plan every day a lot more thoroughly. It would also mean that we would be able to plan for enough staff and volunteers not to turn children away during the first few days.

Rock Climbing Trip

(23rd August 2006)

Girls that had been regularly attending the Slater Hall during the summer scheme were taken on a trip to Creation Climbing at the Epic Centre, Balsall Heath.

The girls were split into groups of 6 or 7 and were shown how to rock climb with individual instructors.
This was a 2 hour session with the centre being very accommodating, providing all the equipment, tuition and, giving the girls an extra 30 minutes of climbing.

The instructors at the centre spotted some girls with natural ability and suggested that they join the club and become more involved in the sport.
