Summer Trips

Getting ready to race!
Go Carting!

All of Local Leagues’ trips were used as an incentive for good behaviour throughout the summer programme. This meant that the children had another reason to try and be on their best behaviour throughout the scheme and another aim to achieve. When on one of the trips, it was commented by one of the workers at The Acker’s that our group of children were “one of the best behaved groups she had ever had” which is a brilliant comment.

Go-Carting, Smethwick Raceway, Birmingham
(Friday 12th August 2005)

Ten children between the ages of 11–15 years were given the opportunity to go Go-Carting. This activity was organised by Lee Rowley and was supported by Steve Mulley on the day.

The activity was planned for the slightly older children taking part in our summer programme. The trip was used as an incentive for good behaviour and was appropriate as a lot of the older children have a particular interest in cars and motors in general. They really enjoyed the day and said it was something they will definitely do again.

Monster Truck Jam, NIA, Birmingham
(Saturday 20th August 2005)

There were 25 children between the ages of 7–15 years who took part in this event. This was another trip organised by Lee Rowley, who was supported on the day by Steve Mulley and Ricardo Leith-Bowen.

Transportation was arranged for the trip using North Birmingham Busways. This was convenient as we were already using North Birmingham Busways for the normal Saturday run of Calthorpe Park, Farm Park, Sparkhill Park and Moseley School. The bus was used at the end of the run of the parks in the morning to transport the children that had been selected for the Monster Truck Jam trip to the NIA.

The reaction of the lead coach, Lee Rowley summarises the outing very nicely: “This was an amazing day – I have already had kids asking about the next outing. The kids’ behaviour was out standing”.

The Ackers, Activities Centre, Small Heath
(Tuesday 23rd August 2005)

There were 40 children between the ages of 7–15 years taking part in this event.

The trip was organised by Lee Rowley and a number of staff were present on the day to ensure the outing ran smoothly, namely Steve Mulley, Ricardo Leith-Bowen, Phil McKeever, Amelia Ryan, Farhan Arif, Jarrar Mughal, and Selina Hussain.

This was a huge success with the participants. The group of 40 children were split into groups of 10 once at The Ackers according to what activity the wanted to do. One group of chose to go canoeing, another 10 decided to rock climbing, a further 10 took part in archery, and the final10 went skiing. As the children got to choose which of the activities they took part, they were all happy and well behaved on the day.

Water World, Stoke on Trent
(Friday 22nd September 2005)

Forty-two children aged between 7-15 years took part in this event. The event was organised by Lee Rowley and was supported by Steve Mulley, Joshua Robinson, Ricardo Leith-Bowen, Phil McKeever, Farhan Arif, Selina Hussain, and Soriam who is a volunteer.

The trip was a real success. There was a lot to think about in terms of health and safety but in the end it was all well worth it. We didn’t have any problems throughout the day. The children were reluctant to leave and I’m sure its something they won’t forget in a hurry.

Kids Adventure

Some of Local Leagues’ student volunteers gave up a week of their summer holiday to take part in an initiative called Kids Adventure.

Kids Adventure run week long non-residential, action-packed holidays for underprivileged children in the Birmingham area. Local Leagues got some of our volunteer sports coaches involved with the scheme whilst also supplying the equipment so the sessions were well equipped and could take place.

Fifteen children partook in each scheme and received 1-on-1 supervision throughout all activities.

The summer programme of events has been a resounding success and I’m sure the rest of the team will agree. We were able to learn from previous activities to improve the organisation of the events and I feel the staff have worked hard throughout the summer to achieve this and were successful in running a full programme of activities which catered for children of different ages and enabled the children to access new environments and experiences.
