Future Activities
Half Term
As the October half term holiday falls in the month of Ramadan (fasting) there will be two hours of activities each day between 6pm and 8pm. This allows those who have been fasting to eat before attending.
Summary
The Summer Fun programme has exceeded the expectations of Local Leagues. We intend to develop our relationship with the local mosques so that Local Leagues activities become an integral part of the provision they can offer to their children and communities.
Local Leagues needs to continue finding new ways to increase awareness of the opportunities it provides for affordable, safe local sports.
Half Term – February 2006
Review Of Activity Aims:
- To provide an opportunity for young people living in the Sparkbrook area to take part in safe, affordable, local activities that are properly resourced and supervised, which they would otherwise not be able to access.
- To provide five days of physical activities during the half-term holiday (Monday 13th – Friday 17th February 2006) that engage young people (boys and girls) in primary school years 3, 4, 5 and 6 (age 7 – 11).
- To identify and create additional services that provide further opportunities for the young people to continue accessing Local Leagues activities.
Evaluation
We originally planned three session per day: 12:00pm - 1:30pm, 1:30pm - 3:00pm and 4:00pm - 5:30pm, with 12 young people attending each session, but very quickly had to increase this to four sessions (12:00pm - 1:30pm, 1:30pm - 3:00pm, 3:00pm - 4:00pm, and 4:00pm - 5:30pm) on the very first day because of the large number of young people attending – up to 25 young people per session – and due to the unanimous request from more than 90% of their parents.
Academic year groups 3 and 4 were also merged together. This allowed us to provide an additional ‘girls only’ session.
New activities and equipment were provided including netball, basketball, baseball, dodge ball and football-cricket. The activities provided were very popular with both boys and girls and allowed every child to fully participate and have fun regardless of their skill or ability.
Attendance and Ethnic Origin
Boys:
- Up to 60 boys attended the half term activities every day, equivalent to 300 young people per week;
- Each boy attended an average of 5 sessions per week, the equivalent of 450 child hours of Local Leagues activities and engagement per week;
- 60% of Pakistani origin;
- 30% of Bangladeshi origin;
- 10% of Caribbean origin.
Girls:
- Up to 30 girls attended the half term activities every day, equivalent to 150 young people per week;
- Each girl attended an average of 5 sessions per week, the equivalent 225 child hours of Local Leagues activities and engagement per week;
- 70% of Pakistani origin;
- 25% of Bangladeshi origin;
- 5% of Caribbean origin.
Future Activities
We have identified two additional services that can be provided by Local Leagues:
- Additional ‘Girls Only’ sessions are needed. The best time for this is on Sunday between 1:00pm - 2:00pm, 2:00pm - 3:00pm, and / or 3:00pm - 4:00pm;
- Additional After-School Clubs for those young people who attend after school mosques educational programmes.
Summary
Local Leagues needs to increase its male and female coaching staff. By doing this Local Leagues can continue meeting the ever increasing demand for its provision, provide the additional services identified for girls, and continue creating and providing new opportunities for the wider community to benefit from it services.
