Easter Activities Report 2005

Football at Farm Park
Ready to tackle

Local Leagues Limited secured funding from various sources to provide half-term activities for young people within the Sparkbrook and Sparkhill area.

Upon confirmation of the funding, Local Leagues began publicising its activities to local schools and community venues to ensure young people were aware of the activities that were to be delivered by Local Leagues.

Local Leagues developed programmes, as identified in the delivery plan and below provides a summery of activities and interventions.

Activities

Farm Park

Local Leagues provided football coaching and football games to the young people attending the activities at Farm Park. The weather wasn’t very pleasant during the first week and ultimately had a major impact as it was cold and raining during the sessions. Nerveless, 37 young people who had registered participated in the activities. The second week saw the participation increase and the young people showed enjoyment and gained new skills during the training and practice sessions.

The weather continued to play a major impacting role on the activities, therefore it was decided to transfer all participants to Moseley Health & Fitness Centre to play indoor activities and this invariably had an impact on the attendance and involvement of young people on the provision.

Sparkhill Park

Sparkhill Park was extremely different from all other venues as the participation rate was low compared to the other areas. There has been wide publicity to the event and even though there were 38 registrations of young people, the attendance were extremely erratic, with no clear reasons why attendances were fluctuating over the period. Local Leagues nevertheless continued providing coaching sessions at the park and keeping a presence.

Due to lack of attendance it was decided to amalgamate young people from Farm Park and Sparkhill Park. This provided a unique unexpected result. The young people, by coming together at Moseley Health & Fitness Centre playing in team sports, developed a good strong relationship. Initially they were playing independently but over a short period of time the two groups bonded and played as one. This was, especially in regards to the Coaches, an extremely importantly outcome as it demonstrated that young people were making new contacts and friends from different areas and in turn making a better community relationship for the future.

Calthorpe Park

This was by far the most utilised activity by young people. There were 48 young people who registered during this period. A variation of activities was carried out by using the park for outdoor activity and playing indoor sessions at Birmingham Sports Centre.

It was an excellent programme and ran very efficiently with high attendance and good team spirits.

Ackers

30 young people were identified through the programme to attend the activity at Ackers. 27 young people out of the 30 attended the event as three young people didn’t turn up.

This gave an opportunity for coaches and young people to experience an end of session break and further gave an opportunity for young people to experience recreational commotion and also discuss what they wanted for future activities delivered by Local Leagues.

The young people thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience as most of them had not previously experienced skiing and it was a joy to see how their confidence increased as the activity was being delivered.
At Ackers, the centre provided basic training and all achieved level 1 standard in introduction to skiing. To acknowledge their recognition, Local Leagues gave each participant a Certificate Of Achievement.

The week supported by the Youth Offending Service was an extremely well attended event. It was acknowledged by parents as being so and it created an environment for young people to be involved in structured activities during the holiday period.

The young participants enjoyed the whole experience and Local Leagues endeavours to continue to deliver the same level of intervention during the next phase of delivery.
