Activities
Local Leagues’ Summer Fun programme made it possible for:
- Sparkbrook’s 7-11 year old girls’ to access 168 hoursof Local Leagues activities;
- Sparkbrook’s 7-11 year old boys to access 168 hours of Local Leagues activities;
- Sparkbrook children to access a combined total of 336 hours of sports activities over six weeks.
We provided both girls and boys only activities to ensure our programme were as inclusive as possible and satisfied any cultural / religious requirements of the community. Activities took place every day between 11am and 8pm with the time divided equally between the girls and boys. Girls began at 11am, finishing at 4pm including a one hour break for lunch, and the boys started at 4pm and finished at 8pm. Activities lasted for one hour and were charged at 10p.
On arrival registration forms with each child’s information were completed and every day a computerized attendance register was taken. Each activity was supervised by two coaches, and a manager remained on site or on-call for each session. The Head Teacher of Conway Primary School kindly allowed us to use their playground throughout the summer, which has fixed hoops for basketball or netball. Seven activities were available:
- Football;
- Netball;
- Cricket;
- Rounders;
- Basketball;
- Uni-Hockey;
- Racket skills.
Attendance
Boys:
- 117 boys registered with Local Leagues;
- Each boy attended an average of six days per week, the equivalent of 2,808 child hours of engagement and activities per week;
- 65% of Pakistani origin;
- 20% of Bangladeshi origin;
- 5% of Somalian origin;
- 5% of Caribbean origin;
- 5% of White British origin.
Girls:
- 93 girls registered with Local Leagues;
- Each girl attended an average of 6 sessions per week, the equivalent 2,232 child hours;
- 65% of Pakistani origin;
- 25% of Bangladeshi origin;
- 10% of Caribbean origin.
Monitoring
The children completed Feedback Forms which highlighted the following:
- The activities available were excellent;
- The coaching and coaches were excellent;
- The venue/facility was excellent;
- They had improved their skills;
- They had learnt new skills;
- They had had loads of fun;
- They would now like to take part in more sport / physical activities.
