As part of our continued work in the community, one of the initiatives we are currently involved in is working alongside West Midlands Police in what is being called ‘Operation Safehaven’. This is a community based project that is run to provide children and young people with a safe and enjoyable place to meet and congregate after school hours. Local Leagues for their part are responsible for running all the sports activities and providing mentoring sessions to the participants who attend.

Taking place at Montgomery School in Sparkbrook every Tuesday evening between 5pm and 7pm for under 15’s and 7pm till 9pm for over 15’s, the sessions are run by West Midlands Police, namely P.C. David Steadman and P.C Tom Bradbury. There is access to computers and games consoles aswell as the sports sessions (including cricket, football, basketball & hockey) taken by professionally qualified coaches from Local Leagues.

The objectives of the operation are:

  1. To prevent and deter children and young persons becoming involved in crime or anti-social behaviour.
  2. To provide a safe environment for children and young people
  3. To identify the ‘risk factors’ which cause children and young people to commit crime and anti-social behaviour
  4. To contribute to the protective factors that reduce the risk of children and young persons commiting crime and anti-social behaviour
  5. To identify and engage with ‘at risk’ children and young people who have been involved in crime or encountered by police at locations of anti-social behaviour
  6. To provide a platform for children and young people to engage in positive activities and gain praise for their achievements
  7. To identify and deliver early supportive interventions for ‘at risk’ children and young people
  8. To support the families of ‘at risk’ children and young persons
  9. To support the Every Child Matters Agenda (ECM)
  10. To support Birmingham’s Brighter Futures Agenda
  11. To support the Youth Justice Board Agenda
